I will pimp to you only from Tales of Symphonia because I am selfish like that. 8(
Hmmm. I think of your type as like... terrifying little girls and dumb boys and somehow, inexplicably, Hakuren Oak, who is kind of like a fusion between the two. And it is from that murky place that I say I can actually see you liking Raine Sage a lot! Raine is a really interesting, understated character and you don't see a lot of different aspects of her in the game without going out of your way to do so. I love her dearly. 8(
She's introduced as a Responsible Adult - a teacher - in Lloyd's life, and she's also the big sister of his best friend Genis. She's initially played pretty straight as a mix between a cool intellectual and an easily-angered big sis type who isn't afraid to spank her little brother or kick pretty much anyone in the face if you hit one of her rage buttons (defacing ruins does that! HOW COULD YOU, THEY ARE PRICELESS PIECES OF HISTORY—). It's comical, but she's still very responsible and mature! ...which is kind of strange, actually, because she's only 21 and she's only the one of the adults on this trip by default because everyone is younger than her and used to deferring to her in the classroom.
She obviously cares about the party, but she's very cold about some aspects of what they're doing, and you gradually get more reasons behind this bitterness. She's a half-elf who's kept her and her brother's identity a secret out of fear since they were abandoned as very young children; she's moral enough to not want to join Team Half-Elves Commit Genocide, but ruthless enough to ignore its existence in favor of keeping herself and her baby brother safe. Her urge to treat terribleness as matters of cold logic wars with her emotional responses to a lot of things, but usually her sensible side wins out, except for things like finding her mentally ill mother who abandoned her again after twelve years. :x Ultimately, like everyone in ToS, she's searching for something to give her faith in the fact that she and the world around her can change for the better — but more than most characters, she needs it to be proved to her, step by reasoned step.
Despite all this, her sensible cool facade is not a facade! It's also who she is. She's mothering and intellectual and gets extremely fangirly over archaelogical sites and constantly badgers Lloyd to do homework and makes everyone in the party flee her potential wrath when someone accidentally throws a kendama at her head. She is also a terrible cook and doesn't realize how bad she is. There's a lot to Raine! She's just... a lovely example of a character who knows herself and her limits and what she feels is the most rational approach both before she gets topped into becoming a worldsaver, and after... and she's at peace with herself in both incarnations, and will love on the party in her own cool no-nonsense way and occasionally tie them up and force them to do their multiplication tables. IDEK! I LOVE HER.
